I want to install a wood add on furnace what would be the least CFM blower to use?
I'm thinking about buying a furnace but the blower only puts out 500 cfm. My furnace puts out 1600 cfm will this lower cfm be able to heat the house? I'm going to hook the add on to the existing duct work. I feel the air movement will not be sufficent.
It is doubtful that you can heat a house currently getting 1600 CFM for heat by adding on an independent wood burning furnace that gives out only 500 CFM. While the fire might get hot in the firebox, it would not be enough to continue to put out heated air as the wood burns down, and when that happens your thermostat takes over and increases the burn time on your regular furnace trying to keep pace with the temp that is set. A pellet stove with automatic feed would do the trick, but otherwise you would have to feed the firebox frequently to keep it going hot. I think you would get cold and alternately hot at times.
However, there are add on units that use a heat exchanging device that transfers the wood heat to the furnace heat, thus reducing the need for higher burning rates of gas or electricity. These can get expensive, though.
Have also seen outdoor add on wood burning units with efficient burning capabilities, ducted via a blower that bypasses your regular furnace and directs heated air to the house ducting, but how much and for how long depends on the efficiency rating, the wood you burn, and the size of the blower. Any warm air being blown into the current ductwork is going to help, but if it is too cool, again your thermostat and regular furnace take over the job.
To answer your specific question, though, you will get added heat with 500 CFM blower, and it will reduce your regular furnace load, but not exactly sure for how long. Just envision a free standing electric heater with blower--usually meant for single rooms--and how much it takes for it to maintain an even temp in just that room, perhaps at the expense of heat to other rooms if it is close to the thermostat.
I would defer to a heating specialist on this one, who can better give you the pros and cons of the addition.
