Natural gas vent pipe goes through ceiling bare?
The natural gas vent pipe from my furnace and water heater goes through the ceiling with nothing to keep it from touching the ceiling. Is that normal? Is it a fire hazard? The celing looks like ordinary ceiling material, i.e. sheet rock or drywall or whatever you call it. How hot is the vent pipe supposed to get?
The vent pipe should be doubled walled. It has a outer wall with a space inbetween the inside wall for cooling purposes. It stay cool enough durning its discharge. You should be conserned if it is not a double walled vented piping. Have it looked at. Or take it apart to double check. If it is singled walled then replace with double walled NOW.
