Please Help... My Electronic Air Filter In My Furnace Keeps Snapping?
I have electronic air filters in my furnace and after thoroughly washing them they still make continuous snapping noise. I know snapping is normal but the manual said that a continuous snapping would blow the electrical system. I have rewashed and reinstalled them about 6 times in the past 2 months and it hasn't made a difference. I even left them on thinking they just needed to run for awhile, but after 3 days and not even a second without a snap I just turned the filters off and have been running my furnace with out them on since.
Does anyone know what the problem may be? I have checked for a broken wire or anything like that, but the only thing I can see is is one of the collector plates is slightly bent, but it was like that before and never snapped like it does now. And it isn't super bent, just looks like a tiny version of what a heartbeat looks like on the hospital monitor.
Otherwise do you think anyone carries new ones from the 1989 model?

The snapping sound is arcing between the electrodes.
This is probably happening at the bent electrode. Why it wasn't a problem before I cannot say, but something may have happened to bend it further.
If you can see where the arc is occurring, you may be able to find and fix the problem. Just don't get yourself zapped! A repeating arc may leave a discolored spot and show you where it is even if you can't see it in action. If it's at the bent electrode the obvious fix is to try to bend it back a bit, but if it's elsewhere you have a very interesting (if annoying) problem indeed.
Call your local heating contractors about new filter elements, or go to the manufacturer web site (maybe better because the HVAC people may want to sell you a whole filter, or a whole furnace, that you don't need).
