Why are the respiratory surfaces of land-dwelling animals found within the body?
(1) Having the respiratory surface within the body facilitates removal of carbon dioxide from the respiratory surface
(2) Having the respiratory surface within the body protects the respiratory surface from the high oxygen levels found in terrestrial environments
(3) Having the respiratory surface within the body brings it into closer contact with the circulatory system than it would be were it to extend from the body surface
(4) Having the respiratory surface within the body protects it from dying out
