utilities expense depreciation expense, store equipment which ones are sellign and which ones are general exp.
this is a question for accounting that is asking which category the following 3 expenses lie under.. either general expense or sales expens for a periodic business i really appreciate the feedback
Selling expenses are anything related directly to the selling of a product, like sales commissions, delivery of the product, taxes on the sale, operating an exclusively retail building, payroll for the sellers and cashiers, etc.
General operating expense is everything that can't be directly linked to sales (or to manufacturing--all manufacturing expenses become cost of goods sold). These include any expense related to sales plus administration or just administration. For example, the salary of the CEO is necessary for sales, but it's also necessary for management of the rest of the company, and that makes it "general administrative" because it's too difficult to allocate how much of it is related to just sales.
The one exception would be the price of buying the merchandise itself as an inventory item. This is also cost of goods sold as soon as it sells.
Depreciation is usually general, but it depends on what you're depreciating. If you have a building dedicated exclusively to retail sales, everything in it, including the equipment and the building, will be a selling expense or cost of goods sold.
This means that you could have depreciation in both categories, and many companies do.
