Generator Head
My 6000 watt 110/220v generator only puts out 5.2 volts. Whats wrong?
I recently bought a used "Rig Master" 6,000 Watt Generator head. The guy said it worked, but hasn't been used since January 2007. I hooked it up directly connected to an 11hp Honda motor. I cannot get it to power anything. Upon connecting it to a voltmeter, i see it is only producing 5.2 volts. Whats wrong with it? I hope the guy didn't screw me over! I believe it is a "Markon" brand generator but it came from a Rig Master power unit. It is made in England but the company that distributes it i guess is in Ontario Canada according to the stickers on the unit. Can anyone help? I read somewhere that the capacitor might need to be recharged or something like that. But if that was the case wouldnt that 5 volts that it makes be enough to excite itself?
Edit - It appears the magnets on the stator and rotor are rusted over. It will need to come apart and be cleaned up.
Could also be bad brushes or ahmeture. If the generator has been run alot or set up, the ahmeture can rust or corrode; causing damage to the brushes upon using it. The brushes a realtively cheap, and ahmeture can be cleaned. I had a gas powered welder/generator did the same thing, and brushes fixed it. Good Luck.
