Central Air Conditioning Suddenly Stops Working, HELP!?
My family just moved down South a couple of weeks ago. Our air conditioning was working perfectly fine (I think), but now we recieve nothing but hot air. We've tried to change the temperature on our thermostat (which is a Honeywell brand), but that doesn't seem to do anything. My father and I went outside to look at the unit and found that although air is blowing inside the house, the compressor fan (I think that's what it's called. It's that big fan that you see as soon as you look inside the unit.) isn't spinning at all. I believe the fan was spinning when we first moved here, but now it doesn't even budge. What could be the problem?
The thing is...there is no noise coming at all from the outside unit and the fan isn't spinning. My father said that he went to the circut breaker the other day and flipped the switch off then on, and it still didn't do anything. I'm so confused...and it's HOT!
You need to check the breaker in the house first. If that is tripped then reset it by pushing it all the way to off, and then turning it back to on. If that has not been tripped then there are generally (not always) some fuses/breakers located in a disconnect box located next to the A/C system outside. It is generally mounted to the house, or side of the unit. If it has a breaker reset it and check to see if everything is running. If it has fuses, whitch might be hidden by a panel inside the disconnect your best bet would be to remove them and make a trip to the hardware store. They should be a time delay type fuse. MAKE SURE THAT YOU TURN OFF THE BREAKER INSIDE THE HOUSE BEFORE REMOVING/ REPLACING FUSES IN OUTSIDE DISCONNECT. If none of this takes care of your problem, please call a licensed heating and cooling company to come and remedy your situation. GOOD LUCK.
