Do ultraviolet air treatment systems work?
We're getting a new furnace, and our Hvac company is including a $684 quote for a Honeywell bacteria cleaning ultraviolet air treatment system. This device claims to kill airborne bacteria that goes through our vents as it passes by ultraviolet lights. Do these work and are they worth the additional cost?
UV light does kill bacteria, but that process takes time (minimum of several seconds, to minutes). Airborne bacteria travelling past the UV lamps for only a short time may not be killed.
I would have to see the setup and determine the exposure time of a volume of air to UV light in order to determine if it is effective.
Even if it was fairly effective (exposure time to the UV), $684 seems a bit pricey, to me. I wouldn't install it in my home.
