When we bought the house and removed the old carpet upstairs, there are screw tips that protrude through the plywood from underneath. I want to remove these so that they don't poke through the new carpet we are installing. I guess what I am looking for is: is there any type of electric tool that I can use to basically cut off the parts that protrude from the floor without removing the entire screw? Would it be something like a rotary tool with a saw blade attachment?
What is a small grinder?
To Dave: I am not sure I am following your advice. The screws are sticking point end up from the floor, so they were screwed in from underneath. I have no access to the heads to either pull them back or remove them. What I am trying to do is take off the point so it doesn't poke through the carpet. I guess the best way to describe it is that walking around upstairs is similar to walking on a bed of nails....
If there are many, use a grinder with a cutoff wheel or if just a few, you could use a dremel type rotary tool with either a grinding or cutoff wheel.
EDIT: A small grinder is an electrical hand held tool used for grinding down or cutting metal or other materials, to smooth or shape them. If you will... since you already know what a rotary tool is, a larger version of that.
EDIT,EDIT: If these screws are NOT hardened (hardened, as in drywall screws) you may be able to use end nippers to cut the protruding stubs.
If they ARE hardened, you may be able to snap them by hitting with a hammer sideways.
Do not hit them down, as you may loosen whatever they are holding below.
