is it possible for me to convert 3phase motor to single phase in a cheapest way?
i hv one 3phase 380v motor ,now i need to use single phase current to run it ,can anyone tell me the cheapest way to do that thks
It is not really possible to use the motor directly. Although you can try to use capacitors to produce the other phases, the voltage isn't there, and the motor would be seriously derated. Don't go there.
You didn't mention the motor power. The single phase supply, limited to 240 x 15A perhaps, is under 5 HP. Whatever the motor rating is in HP or KW (mechanical output), the supply is about 20% more to allow for motor losses (efficiency).
The most likely device you can get if there is sufficient supply is a single phase to three phase VFD (electronic motor speed controller). This is like an inverter. You buy one that uses the single phase supply to produce a three phase supply of appropriate voltage and frequency to run the motor. You have to allow another 20% for losses. Allowing for motor losses and inverter losses, the mechanical rating is 60-70% of the power needed. This means that from a single phase supply of 3600W you might expect to run a 3 HP motor (2.4kW mechanical output). This is really the best choice, as the controller probably gives a lot of other functions, including a programmed start-up.
There are also rotary inverters of various types (similar to a motor and generator). Some combine the motor and three phase generator. If it was me I would go for the VFD.
Another solution that may be cheaper if it is possible is a new single phase motor. It may or may not have the starting torque, is physically bigger, and runs rougher. You will be limited to about 5 HP size maximum.
About power rating, it is possible the motor is bigger than required for some reason. You can check that by measuring the current under maximum load, and comparing with the rated current.
