Use window unit to cool thru furnace ducts?
We are renting a house that has windows that do now allow for window units. Is it possible to buy a larger window unit and place it in the basement next to the furnace and use the existing ducts to blow that air thru the house? We are trying to avoind having to pay $1000 for enough portable units that may not even work.
We don't plan on staying past the lease end in November.
No, there are two reasons why this will not work:
1.A large window unit is not powerful enough to cool a whole house
2.The hot side of your window A/C will heat the inside of the house, cancelling the cold side.
There are portable units available that sit on the floor and have a duct to blow the hot air outside through a small opening. If you have windows that open sideways, there are special air conditioners for those, but they are much more expensive. I installed a regular window air conditioner unit in a sliding window. I had to block part of the window with Plexiglas, but it worked. In either case, consider buying used air conditioners and re-selling them when you are done; that will reduce your total investment.
What you can do is be very selective on which room you will cool. Cooling only the bedrooms will let you sleep at night.

A B unit, in railroad terminology, is a locomotive unit which does not have a driving cab, or crew compartment, and must therefore be controlled from another, coupled locomotive with a driving cab. The term booster unit is also used. The concept was largely confined to North America. Elsewhere, locomotives without driving cabs were rare. Some B units cannot be moved without a controlling unit attached, but most have some simple controls inside, and often a side window at that control station.
