Wood Stove
Was thinking of installing a wood stove - can a stove pipe go up through the house up past the roof?
I want to install a free-standing wood stove in the corner of the living room, but I'm not sure if a stove pipe could just go straight up through the house without going through an existing chimney.
Are there ways to insulate it or cover it to reduce any risk of fire?
Have you seen this before?
This would also involve going through the second floor and the attic.
I whole heartily agree with the first answers. Check with your insurance company. They may drop you. There are kits that are triple insulated that you can buy to go either through the roof or out through the wall and up. I went through my roof and had nothing but trouble with leaks etc. If you go through the roof buy several good books on running a chimney through the roof. Talk to a carpenter to see what needs to be done. I have a heat a lator fire place. I removed my chimney that went through my second story,patched my roof and I ran my chimney out the wall and up out, past my roof overhang. There are all kinds of attachments to secure it to the outer wall studs. It is easy to surround shiny chimney with matching materials of your present house so that it fits into the design. Best of all you don't have to fight the leaking roof. Check your local building ordinances for a permit. Or you may be required to remove it. Research it first, you may have to go to plan "B".
your free standing stove may have to have insulated materials applied to the floor and or the walls to meet code. Check this out also.
